The Las Vegas Monorail

The Las Vegas Monorail (technically the Robert N. Broadbent Las Vegas Monorail) was finally completed and opened to the public in July 2004. It was then plagued by several problems, the largest being parts falling from the monorail to the ground below. After several starts and stops, so to speak, it opened without further issues in early 2005.

The monorail currently spans 3.9 miles and takes approximately 15 minutes from end to end. The majority runs just about a block east of and roughtly parallel to the Strip and actually has no direct presence on the Strip itself. Though the stations are close to hotels, riders still need to hoof it to the Strip - not a pleasant prospect when you’re not sure of the area and/or it’s extremely hot out!

Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday from 7:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M, and Friday - Sunday from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M., 365 days a year. Trains arrive every 4-12 minutes, usually every 5-6 minutes during peak travel periods.

The stations from north to south are located at:

Plans have been approved for a route to McCarran airport, though no further information has been announced. Talk about a much-needed expansion!

The current rate for a single-ride ticket is $5, and a two-ride ticket is $9, though a one-day pass can also be purchased for $9 in July only (a one-day pass is normally $15). Locals get to ride for $1 with valid Nevada ID!

Tickets can be purchased at ticket vending machines at each station above (TVMs accept cash, all major credit cards and debit cards, and charge no service fees), online or at customer service booths which are open from 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
