Happiest Place on Earth: The Double Down Saloon

Happiest Place on Earth: The Double Down Saloon

Arguably the biggest and best dive bar in Vegas is also known as the “Happiest Place on Earth,” though the kind of entertainment it offers is vastly different than the ol’ mouse ears!
From the minute you enter the Double Down Saloon you know you’re not going to be getting anything froofy. But then what else would you expect from a bar that created the bacon martini and “Ass Juice?” You only live once, right?
They serve everyone: “bums, punks, hipsters, bohemians, rockabilly greasers and regular joes.” The atmosphere is, well, don’t step foot in the door if you’re OCD about cleanliness. …read more

Nine Fine Irishmen

Nine Fine Irishmen

It goes without saying that Vegas has a lot of bars, but only one can say it’s a genuine tavern from Ireland! Nine Fine Irishmen was actually built in Ireland before it was taken apart piece by piece, shipped to Las Vegas, and rebuilt at the New York New York.
Celtic music and a Victorian bar create the unique atmosphere, and after 10pm folk singers, kilt-wearing dancers and rock cover bands keep customers happy. Their most popular drinks are, unsurprisingly, stout and whiskey. And don’t forget the food, including the Kilmore Quay Fisherman’s Pie which claims to be a twist …read more

Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet

Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet

It’s been several years since we last went to the Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet here in town. It was dark and crowded and noisy and I have no reason to think that’s changed over the years! We found what we were looking for (summer hats for the kids), but as with anywhere, buyer beware (knock-offs galore) and keep an eye on the prices!
Las Vegas’s Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet has been around since 1991. It has 600 booths sharing 150,000 square feet of space, as well as an outdoor space of approximately 50,000. It’s only open three days a week – Friday, Saturday …read more

Bowling at the Santa Fe Station

Spouses were invited to join as well, and while I do like to bowl I’m not terribly good at it unless a Wii is involved, so I decided Thursday nights will be girls-night-in for me and the kids.
Anyway, we’ve taken the girls bowling just once last fall while they were out for a school break. We chose one close to us, the bowling center at Santa Fe Station Casino. One thing that …read more
