Take your Vegas vacation way off-Strip – and three miles up!

Skydive Las Vegas offers a unique view of southern Nevada — rather, whatever you manage to take in before the jitters take over! At 10,000 feet you’re all but guaranteed to see the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Colorado River, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, and Mt. Charleston.

A free shuttle picks you up on the Strip (you need to call 1-800-875-9348 to find out where) at 8:00am and 12:00 noon and also drops you off when your day is done. You can, of course, save a bit of time by getting yourself to the Boulder City Airport.

Once at the Skydive Las Vegas site you’ll spend some time watching videos, practicing techniques and signing a whole lot of paperwork! Classes are offered for free every day at 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm by appointment (special times can be requested) and it’s recommended that you register beforehand since those are given priority over walk-ins. After training you only pay for a dive if you still feel like you want to take the plunge.

First-timers have to do a mandatory tandem jump which will cost about $199 (a one-mile skydive is $149) and last about 2-3 hours from training to landing. A second skydive on the same day is $149, within the same week is $169, and within the same month is $179. If you just want a ride in the airplane it’ll cost you $50.

Souvenir videos and pictures can be purchased in packages with the cheapest option starting at $69 and going up from there.

All jumpers must be over 18 years old with photo I.D., in good physical and mental condition, 100% sober, under 240 lbs, and height/weight proportionate.

Our forecast this week predicted the chance of snow over the next few days, but as usual, the closer we got, it changed to rain, and now it’s just supposed to be cloudy. While this is disappointing for those of us who actually like and/or miss snow (or even rain), we don’t have to despair!

Mount Charleston is located about half an hour northwest of Las Vegas. It’s a wonderful getaway year-round: in the summer it stays cool and bearable (with some decent campgrounds), and in the winter Las Vegas locals can have a taste of what a real winter is like by heading up for a day in the snow (but be careful!).

There are also hiking trails [more], skiing, a hotel, and The Mount Charleston Lodge. Check the weather forecast before you go!
