The Las Vegas Hepatitis C/HIV Crisis

The Las Vegas Hepatitis C/HIV Crisis

I’m not sure how widespread this story is, but last week Las Vegans heard the news that the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada and a few other related clinics had, for the last four years, been reusing vials and syringes from patient to patient to save money.
From 2004 to January 2008, 40,000 people are said to have been put at risk by this unbelievable lack of intelligence.
People are being tested left and right now – most at their own cost because the center refuses to get involved further. And as you can imagine, the attorney commercials on TV …read more

Yet Another Las Vegas School Shooting

Yet Another Las Vegas School Shooting

For the third time in less than two weeks, a shooting incident has left a Las Vegas student has been gunned down by another student.
First we had Christopher Privett who was gunned down and killed by a classmate on his way home from school on February 15.
Then there was gunfire outside the parking lot of Bonanza High School last week that ended with a 19-year-old wounded, though police say the shooting was not connected to the school. (The apartment complex it happened at, incidentally, was the first one we lived in when we first moved here. It probably goes …read more

The Monte Carlo Hotel to Reopen

The Monte Carlo Hotel to Reopen

It didn’t make it by Super Bowl Sunday, but the Monte Carlo Hotel, which caught fire last month, is set to reopen this Friday, February 15th. The hotel will continue to relocate guests to other hotels through the 14th.
Crews have been working almost constantly on clean-up, with most of the fire damage located on the upper exterior facade and roof of the building. Some areas will remained closed for the foreseeable future but these should not inconvenience guests.
It has since been determined that welders working on the roof were neglectful by not laying down “slag mats” prior to …read more

It’s A Small World After All: Florida Fugitive Caught in Vegas

It’s A Small World After All: Florida Fugitive Caught in Vegas

This morning as I was ironing clothes for the kids to wear to school I caught a blurb on the morning news about a man from Florida who broke out of prison 33 years ago and was finally apprehended here in Vegas last night. He’d changed his name, his social security number, and was married, had kids and grandkids but no one knew who he really was.
I saw the kids off to school and my next door neighbor was also out front and asked if I’d heard about our neighbor. I said no, thinking the worst, that someone had died …read more

Monte Carlo Hotel Hopes to Open by Super Bowl Sunday

Monte Carlo Hotel Hopes to Open by Super Bowl Sunday

While the fire damage from the Monte Carlo fire last week is mostly superficial and an inspection on Saturday confirmed that it’s safe to inhabit, hotel officials have decided to keep the hotel closed for now while the investigation and inspections continue. They’re hoping to re-open within the next two weeks, though, in time for Super Bowl Sunday on February 3.
A lot will have to be done before then: Clark County Building Department chief Ron Lynn said debris could fall on areas where people might be and will require the blackened exterior to be repaired; several exits are not …read more

There are no reports of injuries yet.
