Plants and trees everywhere are blooming and releasing pollen. The biggest offenders right now are fruitless mulberry trees and European olive trees, of which several of my neighbors have.

According to the LVRJ, developers in the 1950’s began planting mulberry trees because they’re so hardy – they stood up well to the desert heat and their broad leaves provide shade. However, a couple of decades ago developers stopped planting the female trees because the mulberries stained concrete, and planted just the male trees, which still produce loads of pollen but no fruit.

Since 1991 the planting of the fruitless (male) variety has been banned, but nothing has been done about the hundreds still growing rampant across the valley.

When we first moved here, my husband was hit with allergies for the first time in his life. Mine, which I’ve always had, went into overdrive. Standard over-the-counter medications didn’t do much and we’d end up stuck inside during the prettiest and best-weathered time of year.

Fast forward a couple of years and I heard an ad on the radio for a homeopathic spray medication that was apparently tailored specifically for Vegas’s allergy issues. It’s made by a company called Dolimed and is simply called “Las Vegas Mix.” The first health food store we went to had it for a hefty $10 for the 1 fluid ounce bottle. The label says “Homeopathic allergy relief spray formulated specifically for this region.” (See if they make one for your area.)

Now, I’m a believer in homeopathic remedies but I’m not going to push them on anyone or swear up and down that they work, though, because I know not everything does for everyone. And sadly, this one didn’t work for me. I used it faithfully for about a month, and it’s possible that there were other allergens at work that weren’t covered in the spray, but combined with the fact that I was still miserable and it just tasted awful, I gave up on it.

Post from: The Las Vegas Adventurer
