Mermaids in the Desert
The Silverton Hotel & Casino was one of my first Las Vegas hotel experiences back when it was called Boomtown (mid-90’s). My then-boyfriend (now husband) and I were in town for his niece’s wedding and we and his family ended up going there every morning for the great buffet (which has since kind of gone downhill - we’ve tried it a couple more times!).
Since undergoing the name change it’s also had some major renovations, including the addition of a gigantic mermaid tank in the Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge.
The 117,000 gallon tank contains over 5000 fish and live coral and is actually maintained by on-staff marine biologists. They feed the fish three times a day at 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and answer audience questions using microphones inside their scuba masks.
The live mermaid shows are performed by two mermaids, including an Olympic-medalist synchronized swimmer, Heather Carrasco. The mermaids use submerged tubes attached to the bottom of the tank to breathe.
The Mermaid Lounge is open every day from 10:00am to 3:00am, and 24 hours Friday and Saturday.

The Mermaid tank is super awesome! I worked on this expansion to the Silverton, and installed most of the lights surrounding the tank on the outside.
At the Mermaid Bar (right next to the tank) there is a small jellyfish tank inside the mermaid’s tail that sits behind the bar itself. When I was working on installing electrical around it I was able to put my hand in the tank (with the biologist’s permission!!) and feel the jellyfish explore my arm. It’s something I’ll never forget!
The tank is gorgeous and the fish are awesome to watch.
My wife and I went on our first date here, as she is quite the mermaid herself. :)
