Life in Las Vegas, part 1
I get asked now and then what it’s like living in Las Vegas and even had someone ask off-hand once if everyone lives in a hotel. I think they were joking (I hope they were joking) but I realized that it was something I had wondered many years ago too (granted, I was 10, but anyway).
To give you some background, we moved here from Utah six years ago. Pull from any stereotype you have about Utah life (I don’t mind, really) and you can imagine the deep culture shock I experienced upon moving to Sin City, not the least of which were the slot machines in grocery stores. Hell, there’s wine and actual liquor in the grocery store! (And in probably every other grocery store in the nation except Utah, but stay with me.) Everything is constantly moving. There’s always something to do or see. I was in a state of awe for at least the first six weeks.
At the same time, the residential areas are pretty much the same as they are anywhere else. We live in a nice, older area with a Homeowners Association (and really, don’t knock the Las Vegas HOAs until you’ve seen the non-HOAs) about seven miles from the Strip. We have the aforementioned grocery stores (the slot machine noises just mingle with the muzak and you tune it all out anyway), gas stations, movie theaters, mega book stores, giant retailers. Kids walk to and from school in the mornings and afternoons, the neighbor’s dog annoys the snot out of you, the sanitation workers leave your garbage can tipped over two houses down when they’re done with it (I’m really not bitter about that). The small differences — apartment-style communal mailboxes at the end of the street, the “brown beetles” (ie cockroaches, which I had never seen before living here) doing their thing — just become part of the norm.
