Goodbye, New Frontier

by Heather on November 13th, 2007

Another piece of Vegas history was blown away this morning as the Atrium tower of the New Frontier hotel and casino was imploded at 2am to make way for a New York-inspired Plaza Hotel.

The New Frontier was the second hotel on the Strip in 1942 with just 105 rooms, and was once owned by Howard Hughes. The Atrium tower was added in 1990.

Only in Vegas would a building’s demo be turned into a 5-minute fireworks extravaganza. Sad to see one of the original Strip hotels go.

I’ve stayed at the Frontier several times because my partner had been going there for years and acquired plenty of comps and perks. Just looking around the place and then looking at the rest of the Strip, I knew one day its time would come. Much of the Frontier felt like, well, my uncle’s basement den. Unfortunately, before being demolished, the Frontier sold its customer database to the Riviera, one of my least favorite casinos.
