Donny and Marie were originally only going to be at the Flamingo for just six months, but they’ve had such a successful run in the one month they’ve been here that their contract has been extended to two years!

Donny & Marie perform their greatest hits (including include “Paper Roses,” “Make the World Go Away,” “I’m Leaving It (All) Up to You,” “Morning Side of the Mountain,” “Puppy Love,” “Soldier of Love,” and “Deep Purple”) during the 90 minute show on a custom-made stage complete with video screens and dancers.

Tickets range in price from $250 (VIP); $115 (Golden Circle); $99 (main floor); and $85 (balcony), plus taxes and fees. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Mandalay Bay will soon be the newest home of the much-loved Disney stage adaptation of The Lion King!

Performances will begin May 2, 2009 with previews starting April 20th. The Mandalay Bay joins six other venues around the globe, including New York, London, Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and Fukuoka.

Ticket prices and performance schedules haven’t been announced yet but you can bet my three little Disney experts will keep reminding me to check!

Tickets for the last performances of Mamma Mia! at the Mandalay Bay Theatre will go on sale this Friday at 10:00 am. The international hit, based on ABBA songs, will hold its last performance on Sunday, January 4, 2009.

The show has been on the Strip for nearly six years now, which comes out to 2,100 performances and two million guests to date!

The current performance schedule for Mamma Mia! is Sunday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 6:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. There are no performances on Fridays.

Comedian Kevin Burke stars in “Defending the Caveman” at the Golden Nugget tonight for $8.88! The smash Broadway hit is about the relationships between men and women and has entertained over 8 million people worldwide.

Despite the name, the hysterical one-man comedy is actually a light-hearted and even affectionate look at the interaction between the sexes, and playfully asserts that there are reasons for the differences.

You’re all but guaranteed to walk out with a smile on your face and maybe even a new appreciation for your significant other!

Mark your calendars, UNLV’s performing arts season kicks off in just one month!

It begins with “The 5 Browns” on September 8th. The Browns, a family of piano virtuosos from Utah, have been hailed as the next big classical music sensation.

On October 3rd, The New York Stage & Beyond Series opens with multi-award-winning performer Rita Moreno. The American Ballet Theatre II will perform October 29th and The Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa on November 19th. “Defying Gravity: The Music of Stephen Schwartz in Concert” debuts on January 31, the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra on March 12, Neil Berg’s “100 Years of Broadway” on April 25 and Tony Award-winning Broadway star Lea Salonga performs May 1.

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will perform on October 30 as part of the Charles Vanda Master Series. Additional performances will be given by violinist Joshua Bell (seen in the video above) on January 29th, The Russian National Ballet February 11th, Munich Symphony Orchestra on February 22, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra on March 24.

Scott Tennant, member of L.A. Guitar Quartet, will perform September 13 as part of The UNLV Classical Guitar Series. The series will also feature Montreal Guitar Trio on November 4th, Anabel Montesinos on February 17, Brasil Guitar Duo on March 17th and Roman Viazovskiy on April 23. Performances in this series are held in the Doc Rando Recital Hall of the Lee & Thomas Beam Music Center.

For the holidays, jazz pianist David Benoit presents his new show “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Two of Jay Leno’s upcoming shows at the Mirage will benefit Iowa flood victims: The proceeds from the 10pm shows on June 25th and 27th at the Danny Gans Theatre will go to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, a charity created to help support the quality of life in the community.

“We are extremely grateful for Mr. Leno’s support of our community,” said Dan Baldwin, president and CEO of the GCRCF. “Laughter and a sense of humor are important in getting all of us back to a sense of normal. The funds generated from these shows will have a tremendous impact on our recovery efforts.”

Over The Top is a “wacky and whimsical circus spectacular where dogs fly, Asian elephants stomp, hop, and groove and one courageous man stands eye to eye with a pack of powerful Bengal tigers.”

The show will also feature motorcycles on a high wire (just the thought makes my palms sweat!) and seven speeding riders in a Globe of Steel. Aerial acts will also fill the arena sky with a double-decker trapeze and Chinese acrobats flying through the air. With audience participation, this circus really goes Over The Top!

Blue Man Group was actually started in 1988 by Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman as a street show in New York. The Vegas show started at the Luxor in 2000 and ran until 2005, when it then moved to the Venetian with “Bluephoria.” There are other shows running concurrently in New York, Boston, Chicago, Germany, Orlando, and Tokyo with over 200 Blue Men working. (Want to be one?)

Each on-stage group is made up of three men in the trademark blue grease paint and black clothing who don’t speak, but are able to get the audience laughing anyway with great comedic timing.

The acts are comprised of a lot of music (mostly percussion), a lot of paint and paper, and some audience participation (as with a lot of Vegas shows, don’t sit in the front rows if you don’t want to be part of the show!).

The show starts out even as the audience is being seated with a scrolling LED marquee up on the stage. Birthdays, anniversaries and other messages are displayed on it, with the spotlighted audience members encouraged to stand up or raise a hand when his or her name is displayed. My husband said he considered telling them we were there for my birthday when he bought the tickets but didn’t know if they’d pull me up on stage so he refrained (they don’t pull people up for their birthdays and make them participate, by the way!).

Though the entire show will keep you captivated – from the core-thumping beats to the deadpan, silent comedy – my favorite was the very end with giant sheets of soft paper (similar to large lengths bathroom tissue) fell on top of the audience. The above picture by flickr user jurvetson shows pretty well what that was like (though picture-taking is prohibited in the theater, I won’t tell!).

Each show runs about an hour and forty-five minutes with no intermission. It’s appropriate for pretty much all ages, though it’s recommended for kids over the age of five as it can get pretty loud and younger kids may not have the patience to sit through the entire show. Older kids will love the music and lights, though!
