Minus 5 Ice Lounge Chills Out in the Desert Heat

Las Vegas has added yet another unique attraction to its list of must-sees: North America’s first ice lounge!
The 2,000 square foot Minus 5 Ice Lounge at the Mandalay Bay opened this week as the first permanent lounge made completely of ice in North America. Minus 5 has five other locations around the world in Sydney and Gold Coast, Australia; Auckland and Queensland, New Zealand; and Viseu, Portugal.
All the ice is carved and crafted by hand and machine, from the bar to the chandeliers to the drinking glasses. Minus 5 serves vodka-based cocktails or just vodka straight up.
This isn’t just any …read more

Lavo Nightclub Opens at the Palazzo

Lavo Nightclub Opens at the Palazzo

It must be hard coming up with new and original themes, especially in Las Vegas. Take, for instance, the new nightclub opening up at the Palazzo:
Lavo (latin for “to bathe or cleanse”) is a “bi-level restaurant and club that balances Mediterranean dining against Vegas-style performance art — most notably, in both stairwell wall nooks and a $5000 copper tub in the dining room, you’ll witness barely clothed stripper/Cleopatra hybrids engaged in bathing rituals while enjoying grapes and wash-towels served by bald midgets.”
However, it doesn’t end there. Taking a glass bridge lined with worn tile walls and stone wash basins to …read more

Free Movies at the Mandalay Bay Beach

Mandalay Bay’s free “dive-in” movies at the Mandalay Bay Beach are coming to an end for the season but there are still two chances to see a free movie this week!
Tonight they’re showing “Pulp Fiction,” and the last movie on September 26th will be “American Pie.” Keep in mind both movies are rated R! Admission to the movies and beach are free, but you need to be 21 years old.
The gates will open at 8:00pm and the movie starts at 9:00pm.

“Laughlin. It’s Like You Own the Place”

“Laughlin. It’s Like You Own the Place”

I’m not sure that I know of any other state whose cities seem to rely so heavily on taglines and makes such a big deal out of them!
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has launched a new ad campaign for Laughlin, the city 90 minutes south of Las Vegas that straddles the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona.
The campaign is built around the new tagline “Laughlin. It’s Like You Own the Place,” and is targeted at out of state visitors and tourists. The TV ad campaign focuses on cheap room rates, restaurants, gambling and the location of Laughlin on …read more

Happiest Place on Earth: The Double Down Saloon

Happiest Place on Earth: The Double Down Saloon

Arguably the biggest and best dive bar in Vegas is also known as the “Happiest Place on Earth,” though the kind of entertainment it offers is vastly different than the ol’ mouse ears!
From the minute you enter the Double Down Saloon you know you’re not going to be getting anything froofy. But then what else would you expect from a bar that created the bacon martini and “Ass Juice?” You only live once, right?
They serve everyone: “bums, punks, hipsters, bohemians, rockabilly greasers and regular joes.” The atmosphere is, well, don’t step foot in the door if you’re OCD about cleanliness. …read more

Picture of the Week: Red Rock Canyon

Picture of the Week: Red Rock Canyon

Located just 25 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon is a beautiful reminder of the desert landscape that surrounds the city.
The picture above is of the “Keystone Thrust Fault,” a good example of the shifting plates from millions of years ago clearly defined by the red sandstone and gray limestone.
A 13-mile Loop Drive offers visitors a chance to unwind and take in some nature, and if you’re in the mood for an extended stay there are several spots along the Loop that allow hiking. You can even bring along a picnic to enjoy at either Red …read more

Take a Walk on Vegas’s Wild Side

Take a Walk on Vegas’s Wild Side

There’s so much more to Vegas than loud casinos and flashy showgirls!
Over the years a lot of hotels and developers have been mindful of the fact that people also come to Vegas to relax, and maybe even get the kids out of the house or the hotel room once in a while too.
~ Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay is a fantastic experience for kids and adults alike. It’s been over a year since we went last and my kids are still talking about it! Their favorite part was the 20-foot-long acrylic tunnel you can walk through while fish …read more

Adult Swim on the Strip

Adult Swim on the Strip

We’re in the last several weeks of (official) summer and while I’ve written about public pools in Vegas for families and kids, several hotels on the Strip (or just off) also offer deals and specific swim times for adults only:
The Tropicana hosts a “Mint Mondays” pool party with food, live music, a DJ, pool volleyball, swimming and dancing from noon to 11:00 p.m. on Mondays. Admission is free. (3801 Las Vegas Blvd. South)
The Hard Rock offers a relaxing adults-only swim from 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Mondays. It’s $20 for men and $10 for women, and local women get in free …read more
