Take a Venetian Gondola Ride in Las Vegas

This is a guest post from Mary Jo Manzanares, Travel & Culture Channel Editor and blogger at Flyaway Cafe

No, it’s not Venice.  It’s the Gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Okay, it’s a little touristy, and it’s definitely NOT Venice, but it’s still a bit of romantic fun away from the flashing lights and noise of the casinos.  You need to take a break from the fast paced action some time, and this isn’t a bad choice.
The gondolas have been fashioned after authentic Venetian ones, each seating four, and operate rides both indoors and out.  If …read more

Today’s guest post is from Mary Jo Manzanares, b5media’s Travel & Culture Channel Editor and travel blogger at Flyaway Cafe.
When you’re ready to escape the glitz and glamor that is Las Vegas, you’ll find the polar opposite at the Grand Canyon — a peaceful beauty that will take your breath away.  It’s a good weekend trip when you’re ready for something a little different.
Grand Canyon National Park was designated a national park on February 26, 1919, and is one of the oldest national parks in the United States. It is located within Arizona, near Flagstaff, and within the parks lies …read more

Star Trek: The Experience Might Continue Prospering in Vegas

Trekkies everywhere may have a reason to rejoice: it’s being rumored that Mayor Oscar Goodman and Neonopolis landlord Rohit Joshi have said that negoations are in the works for Neonopolis to take on Star Trek: The Experience!
The popular Vegas attraction closed its doors for good at The Las Vegas Hilton last month after a very successful ten year run. Apparently a deal has already been placed before CBS Licensing, who owns the Experience.
The attraction at the Hilton has so far only been partly dismantled, which would make for easier transport to another location nearby. They have until January to …read more

Mermaids in the Desert

Mermaids in the Desert

The Silverton Hotel & Casino was one of my first Las Vegas hotel experiences back when it was called Boomtown (mid-90’s). My then-boyfriend (now husband) and I were in town for his niece’s wedding and we and his family ended up going there every morning for the great buffet (which has since kind of gone downhill – we’ve tried it a couple more times!).
Since undergoing the name change it’s also had some major renovations, including the addition of a gigantic mermaid tank in the Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge.
The 117,000 gallon tank contains over 5000 fish and live coral …read more

Did You Know? The Luxor Beam

Did You Know? The Luxor Beam

One of the most recognizable landmarks in the Las Vegas valley is the Luxor pyramid and the fixed spotlight at the top. It’s the brightest beam in the world and you can see it from anywhere in the valley at night – even way out in the suburbs – and has been known to be seen as far away as Laughlin and Mesquite!
As you can imagine, it was a little disconcerting when we first moved here to see a giant beam of light off in the distance, but now it’s just part of the landscape (though it’s still neat …read more
