Well, they didn’t create it, they’ve just spent the last eight months compiling it!

The Las Vegas Sun unveiled their newest project yesterday: The History of Las Vegas. The website follows the last 103 years of Vegas history with news stories, videos, articles, pictures and opinions:

The largest American city founded in the 20th century took shape as a railroad watering hole before turning into the “Gateway to the Hoover Dam.” From there the town was known by its seedy mob label as “Sin City,” before finally transforming into the corporately-financed adult playground called the “Entertainment Capital of the World.”

I love history and have already spent hours at the site. I’m fascinated by the changes, the growth and the people who have also found the city fascinating.

One of my favorite sections is the news archive with news stories dating back to 1950! There’s also a “Today In History” in the sidebar at the right. Today’s says: “Today in 1905, William Clark auctioned off 600 plots of land for $265,000 — giving birth to Las Vegas.” If he only knew, right?

You can also learn the truth about the city’s ties to the mob with a pretty cool interactive page that maps out city connections, personal connections and casino connections to one of the most infamous periods in Las Vegas history.

What’s your favorite section? What did you learn that you didn’t know before?
