Tonight’s Fireworks Show on the Strip

Tonight’s Fireworks Show on the Strip

What’s better than over 8 minutes of fireworks from the tops of a whole lot of hotel buildings? The kids love it, we love it, the newscasters definitely love it!
This year’s New Year’s Eve production has been in motion for months and set-up has been going on for the last five days. This is the fourth year that Fireworks by Grucci has taken care of the Strip and have managed to have Las Vegas’s show billed as the largest New Year’s Eve display in the world!
It’s breezy outside right now but they’ve never had to cancel a show and …read more

The Kind-of Opening of the Palazzo Hotel

The Kind-of Opening of the Palazzo Hotel

The much-hyped 2007 opening of the Palazzo Hotel kind of happened yesterday. Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club opened, as well as the gaming area but they were so low-key that not many people even knew about it. The 3,068-room hotel itself is not actually open yet though reservations have been set for as early as January 6.
The reason seems to be that the Palazzo got a last-minute permit to open certain areas, which I guess counts as a 2007 opening. The company announced back in August that it would be opening December 20, but after structural issues were found the date has …read more

Las Vegas Christmas Lights Update

Las Vegas Christmas Lights Update

I was flipping through the stack of mail this afternoon on my way back from the mailbox and came close to tossing the “Centennial View,” a small “neighborhood newspaper” that clutters up our mailbox every few days.
The front page caught my eye, though, with a scene that looked familiar: The paper had done a small article on the house down the street!
The retired homeowners said that it takes them a full week to get the decorations up and they even have neighborhood kids start coming around prior to Thanksgiving asking when it’s going to be ready. I admit, I …read more

New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas

New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas

As you’d expect there are a lot of things to do around the valley on New Year’s Eve!

America’s Party on Fremont Street. The theme of the big bash on the Strip is “The Best is Yet to Come” and an estimated 300,000+ people are expected to attend (or, as the newscasters say every year, “300,000 of your closest friends!” Locals know who I’m talking about, right?).

Las Vegas Christmas Lights

Las Vegas Christmas Lights

One of our family traditions each year is to drive around surrounding neighborhoods a couple of days before Christmas and look at the house lights.
There’s one house down the street that goes all out every year: Decorations start going up the day after Thanksgiving and continue all throughout the following weekend. Once they’re up cars pull over in front of the house to take it all in, and every year new stuff is added.

This year they added a countdown timer in the window! The kids got a kick out of that.
When do you take your lights and/or holiday …read more

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Christmas is over, now what to do with the tree? Instead of dumping it out at the curb, consider taking it in to be recycled. There are several recycling programs around the Las Vegas valley, just make sure all non-organic items are removed first (ornaments, tinsel, etc). Flocked trees cannot be recycled.
Most locations are open 24 hours and the program will run until January 15. For more information, call 822-7700.
