Happy 143rd Birthday, Nevada!

Happy Nevada Day! Today commemorates the admission of the State of Nevada into the union on October 31, 1864. In 2003 the state legislature decided that it would be observed on the last Friday of October (instead of on its official admission day) in the hopes that a three day weekend would garner more interest. Works for me!

It’s a state holiday so schools are out, as well as libraries, some banks, and all state offices. Post offices and trash collection are still open. LVRJ.com has a more comprehensive list.

~ The word “Nevada” is the Spanish feminine form of “covered in snow.” The official pronunciation of the word is Nevăda.

~ Nevada’s official nickname is “The Silver State” due to the large number of silver deposits that were discovered and mined here.

~ The state animal is the Desert Bighorn Sheep. The state flower is the sage brush. The state bird is the Mountain Bluebird. The state fish is the Lahontan cutthroat trout. The state trees are the Single-Leaf Pinon and the Bristlecone Pine.

~ Nevada was the 36th state to enter the union and the phrase “Battle Born” on the state flag reflects the state’s entry into the union during the Civil War.

~ As of 2006 the population was estimated at about 2.6 million. 85% of residents live in Las Vegas, Henderson and Reno.

~ Carson City is the state capitol but Las Vegas is the largest city.

~ Las Vegas means “The Fertile Valleys.”
