Nevada Power Rate Increase

Nevada Power Rate Increase

When LVRJ readers picked Nevada Power as Las Vegas’s worst public utility, I thought yeah, it’s easy to moan and groan about something you kind of have to have. But over the summer they’ve instituted a 11.5% rate hike, and I saw the light (so to speak). This increase has raised the average power bill $25 per month.
Nevada Power claims this will help us save money in the long run since they just dropped over $1.3 billion dollars on a new infrastructure, but how kind of them to force this on residents during the hottest months of the year.
“This rate …read more

Save Your Skin

Save Your Skin

We’ve been in the throes of summer for a solid three months now. Our temps have been dancing over the 100° mark since June, vegetation has faded to browns and beiges, and my skin is is screaming for mercy within the first five minutes of being outside (it’s always hard getting back into the sunblock habit every year).

The best product we’ve found — for kids and adults — is the Banana Boat Kids SPF 50 sunblock. It’s all we use (when we remember it), and it’s the only thing I recommend anymore. There have been a few instances where I’ve …read more

Bonnie Springs Old Nevada

Bonnie Springs Old Nevada

One of the first hidden gems we found when we moved here was Bonnie Springs Old Nevada. Located at 1 Gunfighter Lane, Blue Diamond, Nevada it’s about half an hour away from the city, but even the drive is nice!
Bonnie Springs is “a replica of an 1880’s mining town built on the 115-acre Bonnie Springs Ranch.” It has a petting zoo (I seem to remember something about the majority of the animals being injured rescues, but I can’t find information about this on the site), a Wild West town with a cowboy shootout on weekends, horse riding, a restaurant, souvenir …read more

Life in Las Vegas, part 2

Life in Las Vegas, part 2

Continuing from yesterday, here’s what makes living in Vegas fun:
- See that sunset up there? That was taken from my backyard in February. The sunsets here are spectacular and I cannot imagine more beautiful sunrises anywhere else either.
- Waiting for a seat at a restaurant. Wait — there is no waiting! The longest we’ve had to sit and twiddle our thumbs has been probably 20 minutes before being whisked away. There are just so many restaurants here that unless you’re going down to the Strip at happy hour, you’ll probably get to eat when you want to.
- The restaurants themselves. …read more

Rainy Days and Mondays

Rainy Days and Mondays

We were completely dumped on last night: a huge storm kicked through starting around 2am. I woke up to what I thought was strong wind but realized it was thunder off in the distance. Within 15 minutes it was right on top of us and we had a freaked out dog and two freaked out kids (the oldest slept right through it). We finally got back to sleep when another one was on top of us around 4. It’s still drizzly but I can see some blue sky on the horizon. Too bad because I love overcast, rainy days.
The …read more

Life in Las Vegas, part 1

Life in Las Vegas, part 1

I get asked now and then what it’s like living in Las Vegas and even had someone ask off-hand once if everyone lives in a hotel. I think they were joking (I hope they were joking) but I realized that it was something I had wondered many years ago too (granted, I was 10, but anyway).
To give you some background, we moved here from Utah six years ago. Pull from any stereotype you have about Utah life (I don’t mind, really) and you can imagine the deep culture shock I experienced upon moving to Sin City, not the least of …read more

Handy Las Vegas Links

Handy Las Vegas Links

Whether you live here or are just here for a weekend, the following links should help getting and finding things around the city a little easier:
- VegasGasPrices.com Just what the name suggests. Site users submit prices they’ve seen around the valley and keep the list pretty accurate. We don’t check it out every time we need gas because sometimes there’s just not that much of a difference, but if our usual station seems to be inflated we’ll call home and see if there’s anything else worth a few minutes’ drive. Channel 8 also offers a Gas Buddy page for further …read more

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas

Welcome to Las Vegas, even if it is only virtually!
I hope my writing about Vegas will be useful to both locals and tourists; this city is so much more than just the Strip!
